You may have heard that digital printing is the next best thing. The fact is, digital printing is nowhere near the quality of traditional offset printing when it comes to pantone reproduction. For a qualtiy pantone print, ink must be specially mixed on a per job basis. Digital presses cannot accomodate custome mixed inks – try putting “orange” in your office inkjet printer and you’ll understand.
Digital printing is controlled by large companies like HP, Cannon and others. When they sell a press, it is obligatory for the owner of that press to use proprietary inks. This works out well for the large companies.
